We did it! Words cannot express the elation we felt upon learning from Alex’s attorney that Alex was granted bail. Wherever you are today – from Pico Union, to Northern California, New York, DC, and all the way to San Salvador and beyond – we are bound by an incredible sense of happiness and community. We Are Alex!
Alex has been locked up since June 24th and was denied bail twice. We are incredibly happy that Alex appealed to the Ninth Circuit and that he has had such strong community support along the way in this daunting process.
Although the defense and prosecution agreed upon a closed hearing and we do not know who came forward to testify regarding their knowledge of Alex’s character, we do know that the truth prevailed. With this outcome, more people will become aware of Alex’s case and know that Alex is not considered a danger to the community or a flight risk – something we have known all along. Bail has been set at $2 million (1 million in property and 1 million in sureties). The processing and paperwork will take some time, but we expect that Alex will be home within a month.Alex must now face a long trial towards freedom, but the granting of bail is a welcomed step towards the hope of a fairer process. We hope to take the momentum of this small victory to continue to make our neighbors, friends and families aware of Alex's plight for a fair trial. We are so happy for Alex and the entire Sanchez family and continue to be inspired by their strength, courage and perseverance. We are also inspired by you and the community each one of you has helped to cultivate. Alex has brought together families, friends, advocates, organizers, artists and spiritual leaders from across diverse issues and generations. We are also extremely grateful for the contributions of our beautiful and wise elders.
